Year 10 Explore the Journey of Water at Severn Trent Treatment Works
Year 10 pupils enjoyed an exciting and informative workplace visit this week as they toured the Severn Trent Water Treatment Works. The trip offered students a unique, behind‑the‑scenes look at how wastewater is cleaned, treated, and safely returned to local canals and rivers—perfectly linking to topics they are studying in the GCSE Chemistry syllabus.
During the visit, pupils were guided through each stage of the water‑treatment process, from initial screening and sedimentation to biological treatment and final purification. Seeing these real‑world applications helped students deepen their understanding of key curriculum topics such as potable water, filtration, separation techniques, and environmental sustainability.
Staff at Severn Trent also discussed the importance of protecting water resources and the complex science behind ensuring clean water supplies for millions of people every day. Students were able to ask questions, see industrial equipment in action, and learn how modern technology supports water safety and efficiency.
Alongside the scientific learning, pupils were introduced to a wide range of career paths within the water industry. Severn Trent representatives shared insights into roles in engineering, environmental science, laboratory analysis, project management, and site operations. Many students were particularly interested in the company’s apprenticeship schemes, which offer hands‑on training, paid industry experience, and the chance to gain nationally recognised qualifications.
The visit proved both educational and inspiring, giving Year 10 a clearer understanding of how classroom learning connects to real‑world work—and showing them the exciting future pathways available in STEM and environmental careers.
