Severn Trent Guest Speaker Inspires Year 10 Students at Moseley Park Academy
On Wednesday 1st October, Moseley Park Academy was delighted to welcome Christopher Harper from Severn Trent Water as a guest speaker for our Year 10 students. His visit offered a valuable insight into the world of water treatment and the creation of potable water—key topics directly linked to the GCSE Science specification.
Christopher’s engaging session brought real-world context to students’ classroom learning. Through detailed examples, he explained how raw water is treated and made safe to drink, using processes such as sedimentation, filtration, chlorination, and testing. Students were able to connect scientific theory to practical application, deepening their understanding of a vital public utility.
In addition to the science behind clean water, Christopher shared exciting career pathways at Severn Trent, one of the UK’s leading water companies. He explored a variety of roles beyond engineering, including opportunities in data analysis, business management, and customer services—highlighting the diverse careers available in the water industry.
Pupils learned about different entry routes into the sector, from apprenticeships that allow for learning while earning, to university-level qualifications in environmental science, business, or IT. He also shared labour market information, giving students a broader understanding of job availability, growth areas, and skills in demand within the utilities sector.
The session was a fantastic opportunity for students to see the link between their studies and the real world, while also encouraging them to consider future careers in STEAM and beyond.
We thank Christopher Harper and Severn Trent for an inspiring and informative session!
